More and more dieters are turning to diet pills for a little extra help in weight loss. There are a lot of diet pills out there, and they all claim to help users lose weight faster. But a few diet pills have made headlines for their dangerous side effects. And that begs the question: Are diet pills our friends, or foes?

What Diet Pills (Claim To) Do

Here’s the thing: Different diet pills work in different ways. Some, for instance, work by boosting the metabolism. Others work by encouraging fat burn. Still others encourage slimming through the building of lean muscle, and there are others that induce weight loss by cleansing the body of excess water and waste material.

Do they work? Diet pills seem to work wonderfully for some people, while they seem to do absolutely nothing in others. In other words, it’s wrong to generalize and label ALL diet pills as “friend” or “foe.” It would seem that the best way to find out is to try the pills ourselves.

Metabolism-Boosting Diet Pills

One of the most common (and generally safest) kind of diet pills are those that claim to boost the body’s metabolism, or natural rate of calorie burning. The more calories your body burns on an average day, the more pounds you’ll drop at the end of the month. Such diet pills often include ingredients such as green tea extract.

Of course, metabolism-boosting diet pills won’t do much when used on their own. You’ll still need the basics — an organic, plant-based diet, lots of exercise, multivitamin supplements, and enough good sleep. You may also want to really “go natural” and develop a love for green tea itself, for instance.

Muscle-Building Diet Pills

Muscle is more metabolically-active than fat. Each extra pound of lean muscle you put on will burn 10-50 calories per day on its own. That may not seem much, but that adds up to 1-5 pounds of fat every year. That’s why many health experts advise building lean muscle to accelerate weight loss.

Some diet pills induce weight loss by encouraging muscle growth. These diet pills may contain ingredients such as protein, whey, etc. Again, these pills won’t build muscle on their own — you’ll also need to put a great muscle-building regimen in place, with lots of weight-lifting exercises and high-intensity interval training.

Body Cleansing Diet Pills

Other diet pills work by cleansing the body of excess water and waste material. For instance, there are diet pills that clean the digestive system of waste material that’s been there for years, or even decades. Obviously, this can result in some VERY fast weight loss — up to 12 pounds or more within the first two weeks.

Of course, that’s just the waste material leaving the body. What about the slimming part? Well, a clean digestive system means you’ll need less food to feel full and nourished, which means it will be easier to cut calories.

So What’s The Verdict?

Once again, it would be wrong to generalize all diet pills. After all, they work for many people — there wouldn’t be such a big market for them if they didn’t work at all! So if you want to know whether or not they’ll help you, try them yourself — or ask your doctor.

While warming up is important before you begin any body workout exercise, it is also important that you cool your body down upon completing your session. Cooling down allows your body to gradually return back to its normal resting state, and calm the rapid blood flow to your heart.

Avoid ending a workout abruptly, especially if it is a vigorous activity with a workout machine. When we suddenly stop without a gradual cool down our blood pressure drops, which could cause dizziness or fainting. A proper cool-down prevents sudden pooling of blood after activity and re-circulates it back to the heart, muscles and brain.

Benefits of a Proper Cool Down:

Allows the body and muscles to relax

Gradually lowers the heart rate to its normal resting rate

Helps discard some of the waste formed in the muscles – including lactic acid, which can leave you feeling stiff and tired the next day.

Cool Down exercises for homebody workout:

Here are some cool down exercises to try at home. Ideally, a cool-down should consist of five to 10 minutes of jogging or walking and five to 10 minutes of stretching. However, that is just a guideline, and similar to warm-ups, cool downs are also individually based. Here are some examples for cool-down exercises:

-	Tai Chi. If you know martial arts at all, slow controlled movements allows the body to moderately cool down all together. (I.e. Fitness instructor Billy Blanks is notorious for his Tai Chi component at the end of every body workout.)

-	Aerobics. Yoga, pilates, etc. are another alternative for progressively relaxing your body.

-	Easy jog/walk, either on the treadmill or outside for some fresh air.

-	Stretching. Great for helping you gradually bring your heart rate down. Static stretches (holding each stretch for 10 – 20 seconds), and working your way from the head down are suitable as part of cooling down.

Tips for after body workout:

-	Drink water. Helps hydrate your body and flushes out any bodily toxins created during the workout.

-	Eat a healthy snack within half an hour of your completed workout session. Replenish the energy that you used up, because while many people think that they should avoid eating after working out to lose weight – it’s actually the opposite. Within that half-hour window, consumed food gets turned into energy rather than stored fat; however, one should be reasonable and avoid junk food.

A gal goes to the gym with a guy friend. She ends up doing the same sets of exercise and workout routines, but why is he losing weight and firming up better than her? It is a common bewilderment among women as to why men can gain weight – and then shed it off quickly. It is one of the main issues that make us women look at men with envy.

Compared to men, women are not as fortunate to lose weight as quickly and easily. Why is that? Well, here are a few reasons why:

Biological. The male body has more muscles, compared to females. And muscles are what burn the calories, which makes you lose weight. By having less muscle, women end up having more fat cells – and we ultimately have to work the muscles we do have, harder to lose fat.

Hormones. A major contribution to the difference between man and woman, as hormones control our metabolism rate, and the storing of fat cells. It is natural for bodies to store fat as a survival feature, women are just programmed to store and hold more – especially during pregnancy. Reason being because a woman’s body was meant to bear children, and to provide them with food. Men, on the other hand were meant for hunting and gathering, and so, needed the muscle to endure the physical labor.

Did you know…though women have more fat and store more, we end up burning 300 more calories per day during pregnancy, and 500 more calories during breast-feeding.

Bad eating habits & poor lifestyle. These days our food is riddled with chemicals and preservatives – which end up being stored in our bodies and are harder to burn. Eating healthier foods with routine exercise is essential to a better lifestyle and losing weight successfully. Dieting is not an effective option. Improve your lifestyle and see positive result…

Cardio is one of the best ways to slim down, because it gets your blood pumping and your metabolism going to help burn calories. There are many ways to get your daily cardio, it can be a daily run, or even casual walks. Reviews usually enjoy the workout while using the DVD.

Home Fitness Exercise Equipment

Air Climber, a new innovative piece for a home fitness exercise equipment, cardio workout. A stationed piece of fitness equipment, with pedals that is connected to an air pump, resistant settings, and hand pulleys to work your arms.

The Air Climber uses air pressure to exercise your muscles. Each step pushes their air from one pedal to the other, to keep your legs moving while reducing the impact on your joints. The continuous movement of your legs is stated to help get you fast results.

Air Climber Review

Cardio is actually the best way to lose weight. Because it gets your blood pumping, and your metabolism going to help burn calories. When you burn calories, you burn fat. I should think that if this is to be effective (and that goes for any workout) you have to make it a workout that counts. Casual stepping on this is good exercise nonetheless, but to see results better and faster, you have to put in the effort.

Workout Tip: For an effective workout routine that you can maintain on a regular basis, make it something fun and that you know you would enjoy. It motivates you better to stick with it.

A new innovative health gadget that, well, seems sister-gadget to the alcoholic breathalyzer, only this time it’s for your health. The Body Gem is a new gadget meant to be integrated into your weight loss and fitness lifestyle, by helping you determine your calorie intake.

Everyone is different in body size, in terms of height, weight, muscle mass, etc. A generic weight loss plan with size categories may not be the most effective method for determining your body’s needs. However, the Body Gem is promoting itself to be able to help you with your calorie calculation.

Metabolism Fitness Gadget: The Body Gem

The Body Gem is a Metabolism breathalyzer, which measures the rate that your body burns calories when you breathe into it. This information is then used to help determine a healthy weight loss or fitness program that would be suitable to your body.

This healthy gadget is to encourage the development of a healthy strategy to weight loss. A good way to lose weight is cutting down on excessive eating, which also includes junk food. Only consume enough calories from healthy foods that your body needs, along with regular exercise that would get your heart pumping, such as cardio.

The most dreaded week after holidays, returning back to school or work and the attempt to get you back into a proper sleeping pattern. Days of sleeping late and sleeping in are now on hold till weekends, or until your next break. In the meantime, how can one expect to function properly during the daylight hours, with so little rest from the night before? Whether you need to stay awake in class or at work, here are some tips compiled to help you stay awake, while maintaining healthy lifestyle.

Tips to stay awake

Eat Breakfast - Having a healthy breakfast is a good way to get your metabolism and energy up and running for your day. Many people skip having breakfast in busy morning. However, skipping out may leave you unfocused, and unable to concentrate or stay awake until lunch.

Cold Water – Splash your face with cold water in the morning. Not only does this wake you up, but it also helps to close your pores from the pollutant elements in the air. During the day, if you feel tired, drink or splash your face again with cold water.

Caffeine – A common solution in society today to stay awake. Coffee and tea have become our main options, and for your health, tea is better than coffee. Many people these days are making it a point to cut coffee from their diet for health reasons. While tea is a better, cheaper, and a healthier choice for a caffeine source, one cup of coffee a day is okay compared to three cups in one day. Energy drinks are heavily marketed these days.

Energy Drink – Don’t get tricked by manufacturers’ hype and avoid relying on these products. These may cause side effects such as vomit, nausea or irregular heartbeats. Also think about how it works. What it does is that it stimulates you to bring and use your energy for tomorrow. How would you stay tomorrow? This is why many people still feel tired the next day and this cycles over and over.

Music – Music has been studied and known to affect a person’s mood. We get it all the time in movies, shopping, etc. Listening to upbeat, fast-track sounds are great wake up music (avoid soft & slow music, like jazz or classical). Either between classes, transiting or in the work place with headphones can help you stay awake, rather than silence which can be boring.

Snacking – Healthy snacks: Granola bars, cold veggies, nuts, etc. Work that requires a lot of thinking and a lot of concentration uses a lot of brainpower. Keep the energy going and stay awake by gradual consumption of munchies.

Exercise – A bit of light cardio in morning is a good way to get the blood pumping and your metabolism going. Just remember to have a bite after to replenish the energy you used.

Napping – (Not mandatory) It’s not a bad thing if you have time and you need to rest your eyes. A nap 15 – 30 minutes is best for a power nap, making you feel energized and refreshed when you get up. Anything longer will make you feel even more tired and lazy.

Gadgets – There are products available in the market to help you stay awake. One of the keep awake gadgets is the Wink Glasses. It is a glasses with a sensor that stimulates your brain to keep awake whenever you are about to doze off. Another gadget is Aroma Diffuser. Place it on your desk and enjoy the natural smell of essential oils. This not only kills bacterias near you but also refresh your brain.
