Body Dome
Pros: Good, easy to perform ad exercises
Cons: Heavy, Ugly Color, Not challenging enough
Have you ever tried doing ab exercises using one of those exercise balls? Well, then if you’re like me, you’ve probably realized how annoying it is, trying to stay balanced on top of one of those balls while you’re trying to crank out some good cruches. Here might be a solution: get an exercise ball. Get a knife. Cut it in half and put a huge rubber seal-cap over it. Or you can get The Body Dome. Like other fitness enthusiasts, I love trying out new gadgets and equipment. That means a lot of time watching infomercials and doing research. Now, back to The Body Dome. When I first saw this, I thought it looked like something people would definitely. Well, I wanted to find out if I was right. Here’s an excerpt from one of the ads for the dome:
The Body Dome is NEW, and as you will discover, is super effective. The Body Dome is based on CORE training. CORE is promoted as the ultimate fitness technique by personal trainers worldwide. You will experience a workout from your Body Dome that is different from any other exercise equipment. If this is your first time exercising, the Body Dome was a smart purchase, because the Body Dome works for every fitness level. Whether you’re a novice or a trained fitness professional, the Body Dome will combine the best features of Yoga, Pilates and Aerobics – all from one exercise.
After reading this ad, I thought to myself, can a round piece of inflated rubber really incorporate the best of Yoga, Pilates and Aerobics? Saying it was a bit of a stretch is probably a huge understatement. But I also give the benefit-of-doubt to overly exaggerated claims like that. After all, who am I to judge? I get paid to do this!
The dome comes un-inflated and requires you to inflate it with a hand-pump that comes with it. (Note: the dome actually comes as yellow, rather than blue as show on the infomercials…not that it matters to me, but it could be an issue if you’ve repainted your living room to match the color of the Body Dome only to find out it only comes in yellow!) It actually takes longer that you think (actually the hand-pump itself is probably a more effective exercise equipment than the Body Dome itself as you’ll find out). Once you have fully inflated it, you’ll find that stepping on it is not a major challenge. The Dome itself is actually quite large once you fully inflate it. The Dome itself is almost 17 pounds and with a diameter of over 22 inches and a height of almost 11 inches, it’s a challenge to find a place to store it, especially if you’re living in a apartment. (The Dome also comes with a pair of resistance bands that allows you to exercises while standing on top of the dome, but I won’t touch on that today). Anyways, after lugging in front of your TV, you can begin doing ab-exercises. Simply sit on top of the Dome and do some crunches!
However, you’ll soon be disappointed as you find out that doing crunches on it is actually too easy. There is actually no challenge. The only challenge was getting it pumped up. If you’re going to be doing ab-exercises, I would recommend using real exercise equipment. The infomercials claim that you could lose up to 1 pound per day. I personally believe it a rather unrealistic claim. But I also believe that, too often people, blame the equipment rather than themselves. Any machine is useless, unless you actually put the time into it. However, not all equipments are created equal. If you’re going to be spending close to $140 on a piece of equipment, you probably should do your homework. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a large, ugly yellow ‘Thing’ in your living room that’ll be hard to get rid off.
